Warangal, India (Urban Transport News): The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha Metro) has prepared the detailed project report of the Warangal Metro Neo Project and submitted it to the Kakatiya Urban Development Authority (KUDA) for getting the approval from the state cabinet.
“Unlike the Hyderabad Metro, Warangal’s will be a Neo system and will be a combination of both At-Grade (ground level) and elevated system, covering a distance of 15.5 km with 21 stations,” said a senior official to ‘Telangana Today’.
The proposed eco-friendly Metro Neo system will run between Kazipet-Hanamkonda-Warangal via the District Police Office (DPO) junction. It will provide energy-efficient and eco-friendly urban transportation facilities for tier-II and tier-III cities. It will be a lighter and smaller system than the regular Metro systems being run in other big cities.
The proposed Metro Neo system will run on the mix of ground and elevated level corridor. Out of 15.5 km, 7.1 km will be built at ground level and the remaining 8.4 km will be built at an elevated level, according to the DPR. Among the 21 stations proposed for the Metro Neo project, 12 stations will be at an elevated level and 9 at ground level. The speed of Warangal Neo would be 70 kmph while the scheduled speed would be 25 kmph.
KUDA has appointed the Maha Metro to examine the feasibility of a Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) in Warangal city which is the second-largest city after Hyderabad. Subsequently, the Maha Metro prepared a DPR suggesting the Metro Neo system according to in conformity with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) guidelines and submitted it to the KUDA. The DPR has been prepared in line with Nashik Metro Neo.
The Maha Metro has proposed advanced signalling and telecommunications systems for the Metro Neo that will be equipped with Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system with an anti-collision device. Traffic lights will be provided at major locations, and the coaches will be operated by drivers with a pre-defined speed limit. The entire operations will be monitored from an integrated central command control (ICCC).
The Telangana government is working on the development of infrastructure, especially urban transportation for tier-II and tier-III cities, and accordingly, Metro Neo was proposed for Warangal.
