Union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari took to Twitter to inform about the approval of the proposed bypass, along with two other projects, with a total investment of around Rs 490 crore.
Officials said the 13-km bypass, including a four-lane railway overbridge (ROB), will help decongest Berhampur town by diverting traffic. Around 88 hectares of land, both government and privately-owned ones, will be required for the project.
“Land acquisition is in the advanced stage for the bypass project. It will be taken up on engineering procurement and construction (EPC) mode. The construction will start once land is acquired,” a senior NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) official said.
The Centre also approved a railway overbridge at Matiapada on the Puri-Konark road with an investment of around Rs 138 crore. The project, which will enable a hassle-free movement of tourists from Puri town to Konark, will also be taken up on the EPC mode.
Among others, bridge projects worth Rs 154 crore have also been sanctioned by the Centre in tribal-dominated and Maoist-affected Malkangiri district. The amount will be invested for the reconstruction of five submersible bridges replacing them with high-level bridges on NH-326 between Malkangiri town and Motu in the district. It will be a huge boost to connectivity in the district.
“There will be a need for land acquisition for the high-level bridge projects on NH-326 because of realignment. We are in discussion with the state government for acquiring land,” said the NHAI official.
Meanwhile, Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Gadkari for giving their go-ahead for these projects.
