Mannachanallur Bypass Road Project Starts Taking Shape. A new bypass road would soon come up along the Tiruchi-Thuraiyur Road to obviate the need for vehicles to go via Mannachanallur. The Highways Department has submitted its ‘cost estimate’ to the government for the long-awaited Mannachanallur town bypass road, a little over 2.6 km between Nochiyam and Ulanthankudi/Poonampalayam.
The highways department is seeking the sanction of Rs. 20 crores. On receiving the government’s order for the bypass road which is expected shortly, tender for construction will be called for in the coming months.
Sources said that a two-way road with paved shoulders to a width of 10.5 metres will be laid.
The Highways Department will subsequently prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR). Constructed decades ago, the LW Road, called so due to the utilisation of Labour Welfare fund for its construction, has become too narrow for accommodating lorries that frequent the town, a hub of rice mills.
According to official sources, the DPR pattern has already been readied. Once the government order is passed, the DPR will be submitted within a month. From the tender stage, the time taken for construction will not exceed two years.
The bypass road is an absolute necessity, particularly during peak hours, due to the manifold increase in two-wheeler movement, leave alone heavy vehicles
According to TamilMani, Professor, Nehru Memorial College, Puthanampatti, a regular commuter, the construction of the bypass road will save time for motorists using the Tiruchi-Thuraiyur Road by at least 15 minutes.
